Apple sales rise again

Despite the challenging economic circumstances, Apples sales appear to be holding up with the company posting a net profit of $1.6bn (£1.15bn) for the three months to the end of December.

Its revenue was up from $9.6bn in the same period last year to $10.2bn, despite the global downturn in the economy.

22,727,000 iPods were sold during the quarter, which represents a 3% unit growth over the same period last year. Quarterly iPhone units sold were 4,363,000.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said “Even in these economically challenging times, we are incredibly pleased to report our best quarterly revenue and earnings in Apple history - surpassing $10bn in quarterly revenue for the first time ever.”

Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer added “Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2009, we expect revenue in the range of about $7.6bn to $8bn.”
